The Rural Generalist Program team visited the Gove District Hospital in the East Arnhem Region, to speak with the prevocational rural trainees and other hospital staff who support and supervise the rural trainees whilst they are rotated out to East Arnhem Region Health Service.

Ms Tania Kennedy along with Jeff Thompson and several other staff made the Rural Generalist Program staff feel very welcome and met to discuss the Rural Generalist program and pathway options for the East Arnhem Region.

Housing for the region was a hot topic as NT Health is currently working through the transition of the accommodation previously coordinated by NT General Practice Education (NTGPE) which has now ceased its operations as the GP Registered Training Organisation for the NT, for general practice vocational and prevocational rural trainees undertaking training and experiential rotations to the region.

Currently the NT Health have prevocational rural trainees in Gove District Hospital, some are rotating out to primary health care in sites such as Miwatj who provide outreach services to Galiwinku, Gapuwiyak and Yirrkala, Laynhapuy and some are able to work with Arnhem Family Medical Clinic as well when placements are available. Groote Eylandt also provides rural opportunities to prevocational rural trainees to work at the Alyangula, Angurugu and Umbakumba clinics. The prevocational trainees work with both qualified rural generalists and General Practitioners as well as General Practice registrars also working in these primary health care sites who assist with supervision of the prevocational rural trainees and medical students on a community based placements.

The passion and interest to continue these rotations in the East Arnhem region was welcomed by the rural generalist program staff attending the region. It was easy to see why the prevocational and vocational trainees enjoy their rotations in this region. Thank you to the staff that we met with and we look forward to working with you into the future.
