Our Training Pathway

The NT Rural Generalist Training Pathway is a specific medical training pathway designed to attract, retain, and provide support for junior doctors studying in the Northern Territory to achieve fellowship as a Rural Generalist.

Making the career choice to be a rural generalist in the Northern Territory has the flexibility to allow you to start your rural medicine training journey either at the very beginning (Medical School) or later in your prevocational pathway (PGY2+).

The Australian Government has committed funding to assist several placement sites within the prevocational years where junior doctors can 'taste' and immerse themselves in working in a rural and remote community before making a final career decision to enrol in one or both general practice specialist colleges.

It is strongly encouraged and supported by NT Rural Generalists for junior doctors making the commitment at the prevocational entry point (PGY1 - PGY3) to take their time, experience rural medicine and primary health care in all of its dimensions to gain as much insight not only for the clinical experience but to also immerse and invest in living and socialising in rural and remote community life.

Most rural medicine career aspirations can be embraced and developed to suit what it is you would like to achieve, and it is understood by the NT RGCU and dedicated career navigators that the informal and formal journey is as important and valued as is the destination.  The journey is different for each doctor in training no matter where they enter the program.
