Connecting with Katherine

Shirley Bergin (RGPNT Program Manager) and Joydip Roy (RGPNT Education Coordinator) travelled from Darwin to Katherine to meet with and support prevocational rural trainees and several supervisors along with hospital executives.

Discussions with the Katherine Hospital staff included how the rural placements had been progressing to date and Katherine’s future planning to develop and expand the Northern Territory (NT) rural generalist workforce in the Big Rivers region.

Shirley and Joy enjoyed speaking with the current rural interns, pre-vocational rural trainees, and rural generalist trainees about their experiences so far in the Big River region including the specialist outreach work that they have had the opportunity to participate in on their rotations. All showed passion and interest in continuing on this pathway into the future be it in Katherine or in other rural locations within the NT.

The rural generalist supervisors reinforced how passionate and proactive they are in supporting these trainees making the rural generalist program part of how they deliver health services to the communities within the Big Rivers region.
