Gove District Hospital & Groote Eylandt

East Arnhem works in close partnership with Aboriginal community controlled health organisations which operate a number of health care services dispersed across the region.

The East Arnhem region covers over 40,000 sq km from Milingimbi in the northwest to Numbulwar and Groote Eylandt in the southeast. The Region has a population of around 16,000 living in three distinct kinds of communities.

The East Arnhem region accounts for 3% of the NT's population. Throughout the region, there are more than 100 homelands and outstations that are almost exclusively Indigenous in population and range from 30 to 200 people.

The region is comprised of acute care, primary health care and mental health and alcohol and other drugs services.

Acute care is provided through the Gove District Hospital. Gove District Hospital (GDH) is located in the town of Nhulunbuy on the Gove Peninsula. GDH is a 30 bed hospital and provides a broad range of medical, surgical, emergency, paediatric, respite and maternity services to the East Arnhem Region population. It is the referral centre for 15 remote community clinics that refer patients to hospital for inpatient, outpatient and specialist care.

GDH offers a number of non-admitted services, including Ophthalmology, Cardiology and Gynaecological services.

East Arnhem regions Primary health care service provides community allied health and aged care, oral health services, environmental health, public health, and remote health centres.

The 4 NT Health operated primary health centres on Groote Eylandt work in partnership with 8 primary health care centres operated by non-governmental organisations. The size and mix of services provided by the East Arnhem Region primary health care centres vary according to the size and health need of the population and the level of access to alternative primary health care services. Visiting or outreach services are also provided to small communities and outstations in very remote areas where a permanent primary health care service is not available.

Gove District Hospital provides various placements for vocational trainees (ACRRM/RACGP) and 5 JFPDP funded prevocational rural trainee placements two of those are PGY1 prevocational rural trainee placements that work in the acute care environment and the 3 PGY2+ trainees to spend time in both acute and primary health care sites in a composite rotation that includes the opportunity to work with ACCHSs and other primary care clinics in and around Nhulunbuy.
