RMA24 - Welcome to the buildup: Strong foundations for better health

The Rural Generalist Coordination Unit (RGCU) attended the Rural Medicine Australia (RMA) Annual Conference – RMA24, held in Garramilla (Darwin) from 24 to 26 October 2024.

This year’s theme, “Welcome to the buildup: Strong foundations for better health,” underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in rural healthcare. Hosted by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA), the conference brought together medical students, prevocational doctors, doctors-in-training, rural generalists, educators, academics, industry experts, and stakeholders from Australia and beyond to connect, share, and grow.

The RGCU was delighted to sponsor Dr Jahde Dennis, Rural Generalist Program Career Navigator, Dr Dayna Duncan and Dr Tom Young’s attendance at RMA24.

Dr Young presented a research poster accepted by the conference scientific panel. His presentation, "Addressing Complex Needs of Frequent Attenders at Alice Springs Hospital Emergency Department", showcased his team’s work in identifying underlying causes and proposing solutions for frequent emergency department attenders. Dr Duncan and Dr Dennis actively engaged with aspiring delegates interested in the Northern Territory Rural Generalist Program. While assisting at the RGCU booth, they shared their personal experiences, offering insights into the unique opportunities and vibrant lifestyle that working in the Northern Territory provides.

A highlight of the awards evening was the announcement of Dr Rael Codron as the inaugural recipient of the 2024 ACRRM Medical Educator of the Year Award. Dr Codron, a valued RG Career Navigator, was recognized for his exceptional contributions to medical education and mentorship.

Throughout the event, the RGCU connected with delegates from across the country and overseas, strengthening relationships with stakeholders and promoting the Northern Territory’s Rural Generalist Program. The conference continues to be an excellent platform for showcasing our initiatives and fostering collaborations with those passionate about advancing healthcare in the NT.
